A Sad Day for Many...

We awoke to sad news this morning; And also to a moment of panic until the details were clear.
The morning news reported the story of a storm claiming four lives at a scout camp. Our troop is away at camp, as well as Michael and Aaron. We only caught part of the story on the radio and did not hear right away that the scouts were at camp in Iowa.
Our troop has many scouts away at camp and an additional contingent at JLT (Junior Leader Training). I heard that the scouts who were killed were in JLT so I knew it was not Michael and Aaron or any of our younger guys, but the wait for a recap of the story still had our family nervous.
I have read several accounts of the tragedy and everyone has spoken very highly of the great behaviour and scout spirit shown by the scouts and their leaders. The governor was quoted as saying, "They all behaved in the highest manner of the scout spirit."
I am greatly relieved that we did not loose anyone in this terrible tragedy, but our entire family turns their thoughts and prayers to those who lost a son in this sad and unexpected situation.
The photos of the 13 and 14 year old victims could easily have been my grandson; Silly, crooked grin and a sparkle in their eyes. Obviously mischeious, but spending their summer learning to be leaders and independent young men.
I will follow this story a bit longer and keep the scouts, their families and, of course, our boys close to my heart. If you can find a moment in your schedule, please say a prayer for the future leaders of our nation. And always remember - A SCOUT IS REVERENT...

So well put! My prayers go to the family and friends of those young men who were striving to be more.

I'm glad none of your guys were involved... You can count on a prayer from Texas!!

I, too, have been thinking of those children and their families. As the saying goes: "There but for the grace of God go I"......it could happen to anyone at any time. It is truly a sad day. One quote I heard from one of the first responders to the scene was very telling. He said "When we got here those boys were triaging themselves!!" His voice showed his disbelief. I thank the BSA for the two great young men in my family!!!

It was great to see you this weekend. Hope I can do it again soon.

Love ya.

I heard the news that morning and did not immediately know the state in which it happened. I knew that Michael and Aaron were at Scout Camp. When I heard it was not in our part of the Country I was relieved . Like you said in this blog posting, it was a young Scout just like "our Aaron". In fact, it was someone else's "Aaron" and it is just heartbreaking.

It is such a sad time for those families and I have been praying for them all.

This blog posting was so touching. Thank you for sharing this with us.
